Dialogue with Mother Dorothea, Abbess and Veterinary Surgeon: Animals Offer Lessons in Loyalty That We Have Forgotten

In our relationship with animals, we often discover essential truths about ourselves: the ability to love, to be faithful, to care for others, and to take responsibility for the most vulnerable. Drawing on moving stories and experiences that many of us have shared with our pets, Mother Dorothea, Abbess of the Monastery of the “Nativity of the Mother of God” in Godoncourt and a practicing veterinarian, speaks about the bond between humans and animals, compassion, and suffering.

What do animals teach us about love? How should we view our attachment to them from a Christian perspective? Is there a risk that this relationship can exceed proper bounds? And how should we approach the illness, suffering, and death of an animal we have loved?

A balanced conversation about sensitivity, discernment, and responsibility that helps us better understand the place of animals in our lives.
